Judge’s comments: “Why I Love Australia is a song of praise to our urban and regional landscapes by a masterly painter. Bronwyn Bancroft is a descendant of the Bundjalung people of northern New South Wales, and has imbued her words and paintings with a deep understanding of the landscape from an Indigenous perspective. Each double-page illustration is connected by a person holding a coolamon, a wooden bowl used in the tradition Australian Aboriginal smoking ceremony. The person holding the bowl is the host in each of these landscapes wishing you the reader well as you visit his country. Such ceremonies pay respect to the Ancestors of an Aboriginal person’s traditional land. Through this book, the reader journeys across lands of various language groups and encounters them in words and startling, haunting, images that linger in the mind’s eye.”
